Heavy rain and wind wreaked havoc for agriculturists in Mettupalayam and Sirumugai in Coimbatore on Wednesday as several crops were damaged in unexpected spell of rough weather.
The most affected were banana cultivators of the region as the banana trees, majority of them not given supports, were swayed by the strong winds.
Banana cultivated in Kanthavayal, Lingapuram, Moolathurai, and Vanchinampalayam, near Sirumugai, and places like Velipalayam, near Mettupalayam, were damaged as gusty winds lashed the areas on Wednesday evening.
At Velipalayam, farmers Velmurugan and Karuppusamy lost over 2,000 banana trees in the rough weather. Damages in Sirumugai were yet to be estimated.
Sources said that banana trees damaged on Wednesday were about two months away from harvesting and farmers, who spent money on the crops, were upset.
They said that officials concerned are yet to inspect the areas and assess the crop damage.
Already banana cultivated on at least 500 acres of land in the water storage areas of Bhavani Sagar Dam at Lingapuram, near Sirumugai, were damaged during the South-West monsoon.
The water level in the dam had touched 102 feet after a gap of more than 10 years, while the permissible storage limit is 120 feet.
