Thudiyalur Arivoli Nagar resident Vijayalakshmi (45), who was returning home after selling vegetables at the Thudiyalur market, sustained injuries in an elephant attack on Sunday night.
The Thudiyalur police said that a male elephant that was part of a herd of four moved away and hurled Vijayalakshmi with its trunk on the short cut that she had taken to reach home.
Forest Department officials, hearing her cries for help, took her to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
The herd was in the habit of moving out of the forest near Ranganathar Temple in Melmudi, crossing the Mettupalayam to reach Idigarai and returning through the River Kowsika bed.
On Sunday evening too the herd had ventured out of the forest and was returning when the incident happened, the police added.
After the incident, the Forest Department officials rushed to the place, burst crackers to chase away the herd into the forest.
